A Guide to Watch Auction Photography
When selling your watch on Bagabon, presentation is everything. High-quality photos can significantly impact the outcome of your auction. This guide will walk you through the process using affordable tools like a lightbox (around $100-150) and a smartphone (e.g., iPhone 11 Pro).

Example Gallery
An example gallery shows the importance of framing, lighting, angles, and background choice. Note:
- The watch is the same size in each image.
- Colors remain true to life.
- Details like scratches or patina are clearly visible.
Step 1: Start with a Clean Watch
- Light Cleaning: Use a microfiber cloth to remove handling marks.
- Deeper Cleaning: For grime, soak the watch briefly in lukewarm water with a drop of antibacterial dish soap, then wipe clean.
- Important: Highlight imperfections. A clean but imperfect watch showcases your honesty and builds trust with buyers.
Step 2: Plan Your Shots
We recommend the following minimum shots:
- Straightforward dial picture.
- Close-up of hands and dial (optional macro lens for added detail).
- Both sides of the case.
- Lug angles (commonly damaged areas).
- Crystal photo (show imperfections if any).
- Caseback and movement (if visible).
- Clasp.
- Bracelet/strap (show all links and condition).
- Bracelet stretch/flex (if applicable).
- Watch with box and manuals.
- Additional accessories.
- Lume shot (if applicable).
Extra Tip: More angles and perspectives are always better than too few!
Step 3: Time to Shoot
- Clean your phone’s camera lens to ensure sharp focus.
- Use a lightbox (minimum size: 24x24x24 inches) for soft, even lighting.
- Avoid light reflections on the crystal or overexposing parts of the watch.
- Ensure proper framing with equal negative space on all sides.
- Take at least two shots of each angle for backups.
- Use 2x zoom to minimize light source or phone reflections.
Step 4: Editing
Use built-in editing tools on your phone for minor adjustments:
- Exposure: Balance light and dark.
- Warmth: Adjust subtle color tones.
- Saturation: Enhance true-to-life colors.
- Sharpness: Avoid over-sharpening.
The goal of editing is to present your watch honestly, not to enhance or mislead.
Step 5: Serial Number
Take a photo of the card/papers showing the serial number and, if possible, the serial number on the watch. This ensures they match.
Note: Bagabon will never display the full serial number on your auction but requires it for verification.
Step 6: Video
Videos can further entice bidders. Follow these tips:
- Lighting: Use soft natural light (morning or evening) or a lightbox.
- Angles: Showcase the case, dial, crystal, clasp, and bracelet/strap.
- Details: Highlight patina, signs of wear, and unique features.
- Move slowly to capture every aspect of your watch’s beauty.
With these steps, you’ll create an attractive and transparent listing that builds trust and draws the right bidders. Happy selling!
