A Guide to Safely Shipping Watches
Luxury watches are precision instruments and must be packed carefully to ensure they arrive safely. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the “two-box method” for secure packing and shipping.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Two sturdy boxes (the inner box should be at least 2 inches smaller on all sides than the outer box)
- Bubble wrap
- Shipping tape
For this guide, we’re using a 10x10x10-inch box and a 12x12x12-inch box, but adjust based on the size of your watch and its box.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Prepare Your Watch and Box
- Inspect your watch box to ensure the watch is securely held.
- If needed, place a small piece of bubble wrap inside the watch box to prevent movement.
2. Document the Watch
- Record a video showing the watch and all its functions (date wheel, chronograph, winding, etc.) in working condition. Also, record the packing process. This will protect you during an insurance claim in the rare event of damage or theft.
3. Pack the Inner Box
- Tape the bottom of your smaller box with three strips of tape staggered along the seal.
- Wrap your watch box in bubble wrap, securing the ends with tape.
- Place the bubble-wrapped watch box inside the smaller box and fill the remaining space with bubble wrap. Avoid overfilling.
- Seal the smaller box with three strips of tape staggered along the seal.
- If your shipping service includes an inner label, affix it to this box.
4. Pack the Outer Box
- Tape the bottom of your larger box with three strips of tape staggered along the seal.
- Add bubble wrap to the bottom and sides of the larger box.
- Place the sealed smaller box inside and fill the remaining space with bubble wrap. Avoid overfilling.
- Seal the larger box with three strips of tape staggered along the seal.
- Affix the shipping label to the outside of the larger box using shipping tape. Cover the entire label with tape to protect it from rain. Ensure the label is not placed across the seal.
5. Security Tips
- Do not write “FRAGILE” or indicate the contents of the box on the exterior.
- This packing method provides maximum protection against damage and theft.
